The wine industry in the United States, one of the few markets where demand is growing, has developed considerably in recent years and now has nearly 5,000 wineries, 70 percent more than five years ago, said a new study.

With 935,000 acres of vineyards and grape farms, nearly 5,000 wineries and 1.1 million jobs, the burgeoning wine-and-grape industry sends an estimated $162 billion rippling through the U.S. economy each year, a California consulting firm said Wednesday.
